  • Cypress any good for carving?

i live in Fla. and I have access to fallen cypress is this a good wood for carving - I can get the logs not knees.

This is from private property and the trees are dead - I don't know about a yard to cut the wood lengthwise yet.

Toss the branches, keep the main-stem for uniformity in the wood texture.
It is not ebony. Don't let anyone whine about hard or soft.
    Go to it.

Cypress is good carving wood. Like any other wood, you need to carve a bit if it to learn its characteristics.

Cypress is what I mainly carve. As it’s readibly available around here in big logs which suit me to a T. I know there are better woods but you take what you can get and you certainly could do worse then Cypress. Most of my life size carved people are Cypress. I think you’ll like it.

I have carved a couple spoons from cypress. It carves nicely.
