  • limb spoons

I just finished these. I started them about a year ago. One of those off and on again projects.
The first three are tanoak, PLANTS Profile for Lithocarpus densiflorus (tanoak) | USDA PLANTS
it's a native here where I live and the limbs are from our property.
4th one is apricot- from a limb at our old place.
5th is apple-from a limb at our old place.
The limbs were 3 to 4 inches in diameter and split length wise.
I went back and forth between power and hand tools. I used diamond needle files/rasps and lots of sand paper.
I used walnut oil for the finish and sanded between each coat.
The shell they are resting on is an abalone. It's legal size and is 7 1/2inches across! My husband got this one years ago. They have to be at least 7 or 7 1/4 inches to be legal. Or else you are busted big time if you get caught!
Hope you like them, because they are done and I'm not doing nothing else to them! LOL But good suggestions and critiques are always welcome for next time!

Here's back and front group shots.
I attempted to carve leaves on them, kind of hard to see.

Much more stylized than my limb spoons. Very nice! Love the different wood types as well. Some beautiful wood!

Very nice work Sharon! Like those spoons! I'm surprised that the apricot wood is that much darker. Was it that or the finish that you used? Pretty nice piece of abalone! The spoons are even more special when they come from one of your own places! Thanks for sharing!

Those are so cool! The woods have nice grain and the wavy look you put on the handles really fits them.

Very nice, my grandson has been looking for a project to carve presents for his mom and grandmothers for Christmas. These may be just the ticket.

A fine bunch of spoons there Sharon, really lovely all of them. I think the fruit tree spoons turn out great from what I have seen. Thanks for sharing this beautiful collection and I'm sure you are relieved to be finished them after all this time huh?

Thanks for looking and the nice comments Terry. I tried for lots of detail and ended up getting rid of most of it. I drive myself nuts at times!
