  • Ornamental gourds

Just had someone 'gift' me an ornamental gourd, about 12" long, and 8" wide...don't know the circumference. Thought about everything I could do with it...maybe drill a hole with a Forstner bit and make a bird house? if I were to carve it, how would one start, and what would you carve? Some type of scene with my power carver?

Just have a bunch of questions...it has way to much potential to not do something with it!

    Picture is below!

I know some people wood burn images/text on gourds...might want to search for examples.

Do a google search for carved gourds images. I was very surprised at the beautiful carvings.
I have made bird houses after drying and cleaning the surface of the gourds. I cut the hole with a with a piece of bandsaw blade mounted in a dowel(used for carving pumpkins) and a chip carving knife.

Have fun, I'm afraid if I were to try carving a gourd, it would look like s sieve when finished

My suggestions have already been offered. I've seen lots of ornamental gourds both carved and wood burned so you can go either way. Googling carved or wood burned gourds should uncover lots of ideas. I believe there are also books out on the subject and no doubt YouTube videos.

Check out Bonnie Gibson and Jordan Straker. They carve on gourds and wood. Beautiful work.

JP: I've seen some carved like lace. Emu and ostrich egg shells, too. Then the carver put a little light inside. As a bedside night light, I suppose.

Wish I could remember where I saw them. All three together.
That's where I learned that Emu egg shells, very dark green on the outside,
have a sky blue layer next and then an inner thick white layer of shell.
