  • Good supplier of wood blanks in UK? Also, where can I get those 'triangle' cuts?

    Hi there,

I wanted to ask UK based carvers where they source their better than amazon quality basswood.

Also, I do not have access to any workshop or tools (I move around a lot and do not have my own place to get those) but I do need my square blanks cut across so that it leaves 2 triangle pieces with a flat back. Can I get those? Is there a company that can cut to size? I hope that is not too expensive :/

Lime is what you should be looking for in the UK though other woods are just as good to carve, Sycamore, Birch, Walnut I find are similar to carve as lime. Look out for local woodyards on your travels, I buy mine from one near Newark, Notts. The cheapest way to get the triangles is to find a friendly woodworker that'll do it for you. Search for wood supplies and I'm sure you'll find quite a few.

Although I can't help you in the UK, I also wish someone would supply the triangle pieces. I can't find them in the US either.

Thank you I've been using lime so far (Amazon bought, most of it). I might try the others you mentioned in the future once I feel more confident in my carving.

Poplar is another carveable wood. https://www.wood-database.com/poplar/ For the triangular pieces of wood, you'll need to find someone with a bandsaw to do that for you. Possible places to look: Cabinet makers, furniture makers, carving clubs - of course, but harder to find) Some Senior Citizen Centers have tools such as bandsaws. Also trade schools .

Wood that needs to special cut, make friends with a master craftsman they have those outrageous wonderful bandsaws and machines, that can cut a piece in a few minutes. I have a pro bandsaw but there are things that it can not do. So I am getting beer and heading to a real woodcraft shop and begging can you help me? Almost all wood people are super friendly and willing to help another woods person in my own experience. Triangles just need a band saw. You will need to start asking around for people who can help.

I get mine from here usually cut into 40mm square x 1 mtr lengths; ideal for most of the Doug Linker videos
