  • Green Basswood

I reached out to an old friend who is into lumber.
He is going to fix me up with a 2 x 6 basswood board 8 feet long. And I can saw it down as needed.
The only thing it's still green and I don't know how long it takes to dry out. But, hey it's free.
Any ideas how long does it take ?

Rule of thumb I have always heard a year per inch. But there is nothing wrong with carving green wood.

Ed's correct. Maybe you can carve a Green Man?

In some instances, carving fast and long in green wood and keeping it wet will take away so much waste that the remains is so relieved that it won't crack.
The alder masks carved by First Nations artists here in the Pacific North west are good examples of the technique.
