  • Gene's secret

I am learning by watching Gene Messer's Youtube videos. Look at the rough out shape vs the pattern, I think Gene is very creative.

Yep, he is a good mentor and you should also check "dougoutside," who is great for beginners and entertaining for everyone. There are others also...do we have a "resources" forum?

Nothing against Gene, but that is the basic man pattern from Jack Price' book...Gene is a tremendous flat plane carver, and keeps his designs simple.

I took a class from Mike Shipley one time, and I think Gene follows Mike's mantra of 'Keep the carving simple enough to be fun, but add enough detail to make it interesting'.

I learned a lot from Gene, he was more than helpful on multiple occasions when I asked questions.

One other FP lesson I carry with me comes from one of Harley Refsal's books: he strives to give the most detail with the fewest cuts, a tough goal but very appealing to me.

I wonder why he doesn't draw the pattern the way he want to cut it out and just leave a little extra wood along the outside.

Yes. It is interesting that his cut is not limited by the pattern. He has added his own style to the pattern.

Maybe he doesn't know what he wants when he roughs out?
