  • Carving a Patch Box Cover for an American Long Rifle

On the long rifle forum a member made a pictorial type tutorial of how to carve a decorated patch box cover. I thought some of you might be interested. http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/...?topic=48487.0

Nice work. I like the small knives that he uses.

That fellow has got the talent of the old gunsmiths of Pennsylvania. Nice to see such fine work in this day of synthetic stocks and in-line ignitions .

I found the tutorial very interesting. He clearly knows what he's doing!
It would be nice to know about the wood - wavy maple? walnut?

I am pretty sure it is maple, after wards they dye it using aqua fortis , a ferric acid.

If anyone wants to see more of the tutorials, go to the tutorial section of the forum, there are several on woodcarving.

He added a little info on the carving knife that he used, if thinking about making one, there is enough info to get you in trouble.
