I'm pondering as hard as I can, but nothing is coming to mind!

Maybe when I see the things in the wood to carve.
      I've learned that I can't carve what I can't see.

Even with all that, it just sometimes does not appear as I hoped.

Randy.... I think some have missed the message. No one says that you have to turn out perfect work to be an artist. All you have to do is immerse yourself totally with mind, hands and heart. What ever will be will be. All art is not perfect. If it was the art galleries of this world would be empty. There's no such thing as ugly art. The beauty in art exists in our own minds!

I think if you enjoy creating something and keep doing it for the love of doing it your an artist. Everyone is a beginner in training at first. Now I am a old carver in training. Skill is in the effort and as you said art is in the eye of the beholder. I am not sure about the no ugly art. But regardless of my thought about the finished work I respect the effort!! When I started a stick look better as a stick than when I was done with it. Some may still think that. I am pleased when other like what I have done. But I do not carver for others. Just for me.

Many years back I was studying the art of Navajo blanket and rug weaving and was told all blankets must contain a flaw. Only God can create perfection so man's creations must be flawed.

'Artist' includes all those who paint, sing, sculpt, and write ... and perhaps film makers and wood carvers as well. Andy Warhol claims "making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art."

I think Warhol sensed the words 'artist' and 'art' aren't very useful. I tend to agree. I like the words painter, singer, sculptor, novelist and film maker. Wood carver is nice too.

There is virtue in being clear with your thoughts. The right words help.

l think in order to be an artist that you need to be creative and create new things, and try hard not do what others do.

Beautiful sentiment... and a goal to work toward.
