Carving goals for 2022?

My big goal for 2022 is to incorporate more movement into my carvings. I don’t currently use a bandsaw (probably will some day) as I like the process of figuring out how to go from A to B.

After staring at the wood for a long time, and a false start, I think I’m on my way. Very subtle movement in the pic above but some movement all the same. Arms will be next.

I never carve this way (feet and arms first) but it is helping me try to visualize what I want to do and not get bogged down by a planned design.

Should be interesting to see what this bugger turns out to be. I have an idea… but we all know how that goes!

I used a coping saw for many years before I got a band saw. works good for cutting out shapes.

Oooh, with carving/whittling...I just want to practice...and try new things. But I hope I will become better and I have my fun. Other plans...I donot know, try that peace and satisfaction will stay in our house, that the (bonus-) grandchildren will grow up healthy (body and soul) and...that the virus will pass away. After that...working in the garden, reading, music... ...

Not so much of a goal but as a desire or wish! To stay healthy enough during the coming year to be able to enjoy my hobby more. If I can just stay away from the emergency room, eliminate hospital stays, and stop breaking bones I'll consider myself very, very, fortunate and satisfied!

My goals for carving are simple - just keep carving the things that sell that are still fun to carve; if a pattern becomes "not fun", I just won't list it for sale any more... I would also like to develop a few new patterns that will be fun for a while.

Hi Guys
I don't have much in the way of goals as such other than to imrove my work with each piece I do. For me it is a journey to see what I can achieve enjoying the ride every inch of the way.

I do want to make a male lion head portrait about 14 inches square and 120 deep so I can get a lot of detail into it,

I want to do a huge 24inch round pyrography burn of a bushland scene with animals and birds to hang over the spare bed..

Want to experiment with laminated woods of different colour to create artistic effect in pieces by carving down through the layers. This could extend to wood turning as well.

Want at some stage to try caricature carving.

NEED to finish my flying eagle.

Just to carve more. I have found it relaxes me to get my creative side out. I want to do more walking sticks and canes.

I want to stretch myself more. The projects I did last year stretched my skills and I look to do that more this year. I want to get better at faces and carve ornaments with actual eyes and such.

I have been there too Sappy. I have not carved much sence spring last year. I think setting some goals has got the juices going again.

Yep, it's going around...my last carving was in July. I have a couple of relief carvings ready to start this week.

Randy, this is a good thread. It nudges us to firm up wishy-washy, vague thoughts into concrete goals. Mine are 1) Carve more; 2) Work on realistic faces; 3) Build a bench-top easel for relief carving (Might be a waste of time, don't know if I'll like it, but I have enough scrap wood and hardware so it won't cost anything to try); and 4) Try to carve a delicate magnolia (without power tools) for one of my daughters-in-law.

What a great question! I think my carving goals for this upcoming year are this;

1) Finally sharpen all of those old antique carving tools I have been buying from eBay.

2) I would also like to get better at my faces so maybe I will do more cottonwood bark carvings this year.

3) Last but not least I would like to just simply carve more. Actually make myself produce a product to completion.

Thank you for making me give myself carving goals. I like the idea.
