Idea's please.

Milling a 4k y.o. kauri log into 6 x 2's (BIG mistake! ) I cut the burls off to sit the rail flat. After seeing what the log exposed, I sliced the burls and came up with a pretty picture. Now they are gathering dust as I can't decide what to carve them into.

Oh, those beautiful pieces give me too many ideas. My suggestions are that if you want to do just one side, do a landscape with a small hill or distant mountains on the wide end and a farm complex on the narrow end. If you want to do both pieces, do a seascape.

I like relief carvings too, but a "busy" design will compete with the burl grain figure. Perhaps an animal shape, stylized and simple.

I have a Kauri bowl made of "6,000 year old" wood. The simple lines bring out the amazing details of the wood.

My first thought was fish. Like at a fish market, you know, when they are laid out for sale. Actually, that's what I thought the pic was, until I looked at it more closely.

I like Lora's designs done as wood burnings. The grain of the wood will show through beautifully.

If they were glued up the could be carved to make a deep serving platter or made into something like the attached piece. Beautiful grain patterns so I would go with something that showcases the grain patterns rather than put artwork on it that would tend to hide the natural beauty of the wood a bit. Just my 2 cents worth.

This pretty small 260mmx60x50 and was in my mates wood pile so i burgled it. Was just a tiny bit of burl in it But I liked the natural shape of it so just carved out the bowl threw a bit of artwork at it and put it on a base. I kind of like it.

That is beautiful stuff. Perhaps you should make something out of it and sell it on ebay or trade me. My biggest problem with making stuff is that once made i never want to part with it hehehe.

I lied before ( senior moment ). I HAVE done some whittling, - of sorts. This is a Celtic cross, 4 inch thick oak, soaking in lion oil as it was to be used on a grave headstone. Carved both sides. 10 years in situ and still has not cracked up. All weathers.

That macrocarpa burl I would be interested in. I have a thing for burl timber it just pushes all my buttons. So put my name on it Arthur.
