As a mechanic, I've heard that the dropped thing will gravitate to the geometric center under the vehicle. Once, I was working on my sister's car on the street, and dropped a wrench. It slid over and fell into the storm drain at the curb. That was a $20 wrench! Fortunately, I was young and strong and had a pry bar. I pulled the lid off the storm drain cover on the sidewalk and went in after that wrench.

Merle, the lid has the same dynamics as buttered bread.
Spend an hour looking for a bolt just the right size, drop it, spend another hour looking for that bold just the right size. Give up, go to the hardware store. It's a talent complicating easy tasks.

When wrenching, it is always the 10mm socket.

Why is when the darn I dropped it thing happens that it flys with unerring acuracy to the the one place where it will be the most difficult to find. Dropped a gas rotameter ball once took an hour on hands and knees to find it and considered myself lucky at that. So appreciate your sentiment Merle hehehehe, Merry xmas !!

It did it again. I was Cleaning My Brush with Hair Spray and dropped the Lid . It went under my Bench , seen it going their. took a Piece of Wood and thought I would just reach under and Sweep it out . Nope had to get down and look for it. It was as far back as it could go and behind a Leg. Now this Lid is about 3" in Dia. and White , if I wouldn't have seen it go under the Bench I would never Found it . Got to be Shop Gremblins. Ha,Ha. Merle

Don't think it has anything to do with age, been around a lot of construction sites doing on-the-site carving jobs...they lose a nail or screw they are not going to spend time looking for it, get another nail and keep on working. In fact, those young ones can lose or drop things easily, one better pray it is not breakable or someone is the way. I build my own things, floors, and walls, and major fence lines things get dropped and lost in the environment. The same thing to doing maintenance using small items...you put it on and it falls, finding can be a major task. Most people I know do not know how to screw in a light bulb let alone do work of putting things together, or wood carving if the area is thin enough to break off is the same kind of ball game. Power tools can also cause wood pieces to break and be thrown across the room and hit a wall ... where did it go? An age thing???, not so much. Only thing about age is you admit it happens to you.

When I was in the third grade I dropped my milk money quarter as I entered school. This was in the bare tiled hallway with nothing in it. I heard it *ping* as it hit the floor, only once! Looked every where and could not find it in a tiled bare empty hallway! Then I thought, it only bounced once? This was 1964 and most of the boys wore jeans way too long for them, so they were rolled up 2 cuffs worth. Sure enough my quarter had bounced (once) and Landed in my jeans cuff.
That may be the last time I found something after dropping it and no, I am not going back to wearing cuffs.

The more significant the piece that dropped on the floor, the less chance there is of ever finding it. A corollary: the harder you worked on that piece, the less chance there is of finding it.

My wife has had the worse luck with 3 falls-no doubt concussed, She had a blood clot in her forearm and the vascular surgeon had to have nicked some nerves as hand, wrist issues are all taking it's toll. I bought a set of exercise eggs which have varying density for hand strength. I have yet to carve as I got side tracked but my hands/fingers cramp up easily. The eggs work well for both of us.

Hospitals/rehab centers are no friend to me. Our local hospital is quite good but is now a teaching hospital which means we get hospitalists for ER visits. As a result we go to urgent care which have actual doctors. Here in southern california 30-40 er visits are immigrants.
That's the rant of the month.
    Cheers

Every body carries them about $25, amazon, walmart.
This is the reason I am refusing one more surgery, I have heard and seen one too many horror stories, I had a power chair but sold it. I have very severe arthritis. every major joint needs surgery plus our hospitals are looking like the third world today, I would not be caught dead in one now. Lack of medical supplies, lack of doctors and nurses, lack of care ....plus they are major full now more than during the high part of the pandemic. One vet friend told me it looks like a mash unit of people thrown everywhere. I feel for you surgery like that takes a part of your life, I know it and I had a dear friend who had one surgery after another because of infection after eight months of pure hard times. I have every kind of walking and various kinds of wheelchairs, but I figure I have to keep my muscles strong in spite of the bones breaking apart. So I force myself to get down on the floor every day, climb up the mountain and pray to God seriously that I do not have to call the fire dept to get me down or up....so far so good. I call it painful PT.
