  • Help deciphering this wood carver monogram

    Hi everyone,
Wondering if anyone might possibly decipher the monogram on the carving seen in the images. I'd love to know more about this piece but can't make out what the 2nd letter is or even if it's a couple of letters superimposed.
    Thanks in advance!

D.F..... My guess it's the cooking directions, "Deep Fry!" Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. I have no idea. Perhaps one of the other guys will be able to help!

Thinking your over thinking, agree D.F. I don’t think it stands for Dan Fogerty.

Not that I think it greatly changes the likelihood of anyone identifying the carve but geological information could help, Maybe the story of how you came to have it. Any background could potentially help.

Here is the problem I live in a town of 30,000 and know of at least 30 wood carves. So
would project there are over 350,000 current carves in the US. So it is kind of a needle in the haystack.

        PS
So am I the only one that wants respond these request with a made up story, like an expert on antiques road show?

This is obviously a work in wood done by the acclaimed French sculptor Dantin Fauvergue. He often did carvings in wood before completing the commissioned work in marble. These mockups were usually destroyed and hence are highly desired by collectors. These often sell at auction for more than the final piece. This is of one of his lesser known works from his fish scale era. At auction it is worth conservatively……..

No, you are certainly not the only one that wants to.

It does bring to mind about signing your own work: It would be helpful to put your name and date, rather than just initials or some obscure, special mark. No one can figure out whose initials they are!

Title of carving a Fish story by alias DF..... darn fool. That one was easy. LOL

All kidding aside....a wild guess is it is a modern version of the Northwest Coast Native Art, as it appears to have the same color factor and eyes as that type of work.

Not Pacific Northwest. Not the colors, not the design of the eyes, the fin rays run in the wrong direction sometimes.
No fish like that celebrated in a carving. Look south and east.

for the sake of conversation....Modern art includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the styles and philosophies of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. You were to take the history of minimalism in art and modern art in history. Where you subtract the traditional perhaps an artist would make it look like that???. This work is anything but traditional art. But unknown and big perhaps on my behalf. But if for example if I took this Northwest salmon and put it in the modern art world,...take out the whole tattoo effect and ran the color rust orange thin into the body as an artist. Then perhaps it would look like this fish. The meaning of traditional art is gone ...and the meaning of the new age appears. Today a lot of art shows clearly the loss of tradition, culture, and history in today's world. But I am clearly saying what I may have done to this traditional fish and changed it in the history of our ever-changing world....and that is a big guess.

So the real question is this modern art which I believe could be, or did someone just make it modern with no intention or was it made by some who was clearly just into design? Or could be made by a beginner...is a big Unknown.... just thoughts to ponder.20230214_160409.jpg
