It may have to do with the type of basswood as I have tried other chunks of basswood with different results. The oil was standard double boiled linseed oil so I expect it was the wood type that allowed a strong grain.

Robson, you are going to give me a big head with comments like that. Believe me when I say I struggled to keep everything symetrical....without the carving looking too uniform. I want to attempt Chris Pye's Sun Greenman but the leaf work worries me. I appreciate your positive comments.

I've looked at it 5X. I cannot imagine having the sheere nerve for that depth of carving. The piece flows in 3D.
Plus, the left/right symmetry is a quality that I can only aspire to.

No dumb questions here. For this piece I used a standard double boiled linseed oil. No mineral spirits needed as it absorbed very well. Two coats are shown here but a third one was added as the oil went into the grain quickly.

Rob, it started with a block approx. 14 by 8 inches. It was 4 inches thick which is much thicker than what Chris suggest but I made it work.

Thank you everyone for taking a look at this piece. I actually did a little video clip and posted it to Utube if anyone wants to see it. I had just finished cleaning it up and started to add the oil as you will see in the video.
