  • Carving Club Group Project

The Conewago Carvers from East Berlin, PA will be celebrating their 25th anniversary show in 2017. As part of this, we would like to do a club carving project, similar to what the CCA does, where everyone carves a different piece or two to contribute to the finished scene. Then use this completed project to display when we are promoting the club and display in libraries and anywhere else we can promote and get people interested in wood carving. We currently have 1 suggestion, which is \'Santa\'s Workshop. I\'d love to hear what other suggestions people on this forum may have. Our club members range in age from 12-90 and we have skill levels from beginner to expert and want to be able to include everyone. I know it seems early to be thinking of this, but we need to decide on a project and have plenty of time to plan and get finished pieces.

    Thanks in advance,
    Kyle

There are some other discussions of group carving projects in the Similar Threads listed below. Most are based on caricatures or other small figures, but you might also consider a <Quilt> where the individual squares are chip carving or reliefs.

Santa\'s workshop sounds like a good idea. If I was a member of a club I would like to contribute to that.

        Wood carving website

The local club here does not have a website. They had a lot of good wood carvings at their yearly show.

It\'s a shame that they are at least not on Facebook or something similar.

I really like the quilt as a club project. All skill levels can pick what they are comfortable carving. We use 5 inch basswood squares. This is one Delta Woodcarvers in Mobile did a number few years ago.

Here is a quick idea that we did as a group club project, we gave everyone a 4\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"x1.75\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" basswood round sphere and had them carve anything on it related to a certain holiday theme, Xmas, Halloween, Spirits, Irish, etc. and we connected them by theme one on top of the other in making a long carved pole, then we purchased heavy duty straw brooms, cut the original handle off at the broom and reconnected our themed handles, then raffled them off with tickets sales at our annual show.

Picture shows two Halloween sections left over along with a blanks, we had a turner turn down the blank in 3\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' sections and we cut them into 4\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" lengths and inserted a 1/4\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" dowel.

Enjoy, Bill, \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"Southowns Woodcarvers Club\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" Elma NY.

themes are wide open- street scene in your town or any town, hillbillys, camp scene, zombie apocalypse, prehistoric scene, jungle, wedding, construction site, Halloween, political rally, college scene, outer space with or without aliens, pick any fairy tale, horse race or any sporting event, big or small- sandlot baseball. You all need to get together at a table with your favorite beverage and just brainstorm a few dozen more.

A friendship cane--maybe more than one but each one with a theme.

I m from Central Jersey and don t know the area close to your club. Unless your doing the show as a fundraiser, you could raffle off the canes and donate the proceeds to an organization near and dear to your club members--fire dept., EMS, veterans group, etc. But if your club needs the money, well obviously, the money goes to your club treasury. Congrats on your 25th!
