I have a 12\" birds eye Maple bowl that needs some oil for protection. Can someone please advise me as to the type of oil I should use? This bowl\'s wood came from the upper peninsula of Michigan and turned by a friend of mine in Florida.

Re: Birds eye maple care
You could also use walnut oil, I\'ve been putting this on maple spoons lately. Flaxseed oil is also good. It tends to darken the wood, but hardens to a nice finish. Thin oil finishes tend to dry better than thick ones. Put it on and wipe off after a minute or so.

Re: Birds eye maple care
Protection from what sorts of foods?
I bought an off-cut (small knot) of Bird\'s Eye maple about 10-15 years ago. It got one wipe with olive oil (?) and has been used as a bread board ever since. I make my own bread every week so it gets daily use.
No further treatment. All is well.Brian T

Re: Birds eye maple care
Thank y\'all for the advice. It presently is not used for food but would not want to rule out the possibility in the future. Not sure which of the two suggestions I\'ll use, but will decide on one soon! Thanks again
