  • Snowman pins and magnets

Since I am spending the summer inside recuperating from back surgery, my creative and carving juices have been flowing.

I am a Mike Shipley acolyte, and just love what he does with designs and love his carving style. I have taken his Happy Little Snowman pattern and reduced it to 64% of the original size. After carving my employees 'full size' little snowmen as ornaments last November, I took this same size pattern, cut it in half and am making pins and refrigerator magnets. I bought the 3/4" pin backs at Hobby Lobby, and magnetic strip tape from Michael's and they work great!

I just finished this one over my lunch hour, and have painted about 9 of them yesterday...I will post the painted ones tomorrow.

I have also made this pattern with a cowboy hat that I will start carving after I get them cut out on the bandsaw...thought you might all enjoy!

For perspective, I put a quarter in one of the pics!

As promised, here a couple I painted on Sunday. Typically, on these I carve with a little fedora and a hat band, and on the second one, I carved a little hillbilly hat. I am going to work on one with a stovepipe top hat in the next couple of days.

The main hat is charcoal, and the hat band colors range from yellow, red, blue or kelly green. May try some different colors to see how it works. The hillbilly hat is nutmeg brown.

I included a photo of the pin back as well.

I still need to antique them, so they aren't quite finished yet!
