Bob Ross is known for saying that there's no such thing as a mistake just happy accidents. This may qualify. I was using the bottom of one of my practice sticks to carve a face. It turned out good enough that I wanted to continue, but there wasn't any space to continue. I started at the bottom of the block and couldn't continue down. I'd also carved right above my face so I was limited in that direction too. It was time to get creative. I drew a Santa had over the face using my phone software but I wasn't pleased with it. I've found a carving where the head zigzag back and forth so I superimpose that over my carving. I was going to stop there but then I realized I could just add a piece of wood on the bottom to continue the beard. I like the idea of the zigzag hat so I decided to mirror using Santa's beard. I have begun painting but I still have ways to go.

Happy accidents are the best!
I whittled a little raft-paddling, moonshiner gnome for my daughter- I blew the hand/paddle/raft angle so I made a little pillow for him to sit on, and it's my favorite part of a project I wasn't that happy with... ;-)

This is a follow-up to my "Happy Accidents" post. Santa's all but finished. I was going to antique him yesterday, but I was out of gel-stain and the hardware was out of the smaller can. Oh well, on to the next project. I started a cowboy based on WCI's booklet Classic Carved CowboysYou do not have permission to view this gallery.
