That will make a nice cane Bob! Keep up the good work! Glad to see you are keeping a positive attitude about it. Maybe the second try will turn out better than the first anyway!

That cane is looking good already! Can't wait to see it finished.
I'm sure it doesn't make you feel any better, but it makes me feel better to know that even seasoned carvers have frustrating afternoons!

Not everything works out.
I was working on a cane shaft yesterday, just for a change of pace. Had one roughed out in Mahogany, 1 1/2" square and took it to the band saw to trim it up. Well it didn't trim great but I figured I could repair that in the carving. Tried to flute the shaft, semi-circular tracks parallel, tricky! All did not go well!!! Focused too much on the tracks and got carried away, carved too much off trying to fix the cut in the back of the shaft and ended up with a point too thin to support anyone. Damm thing, waste of a good afternoon, so I smacked it in two, in frustration.
My point is, ....... it's only wood. I picked out a better piece to match the head (a Perigrine Falcon) and took my time cutting it out. The new shaft is Zebrawood and is much heavier so some trimming will be in order. But not fluting. A good experience for a seasoned carver, reminding me that not everything works out, so pay more attention to what you are doing!
