  • My 2nd Detailed Carving - Rose from Maple

This is my second detailed carving and was a custom order. . It's been done with a lathe and a power drill but all the sanding was done by hand. It's been coloured with aniline dyes, water colours and acrylic.
There are many things I don't like about it but it was a learning experience. The first detailed carving I did was a rose done in linden wood and it was much easier but I wanted a challenge.

image.jpeg image.jpeg Is it possible to get a mod to fix the title. It should say maple not maole. Please?

Fine design with stunning color. I'd like to see the petal bases cut a little deeper. KNock up a fake one and see if you can get in there with a knife.

And of course, now we all know that you like to carve maole = exotic species from the Zippermouth Valley in the Kingdom of Uttar Bhordum.

I can see using a lathe to turn the basic shape, but don't understand the power drill. It is and outstanding carving with vibrant color

Lovely carving Nikki! Really like the deep red. That dye sure does the trick.

Hi NIKKI, for your 2nd carving you did a Great Job. Your setting the Bar High for yourself and looks like you can handle it. Merle

Thank you RV. I agree that it would have looked nicer if the petal bases were cut deeper but the design was made to be drop proof. Since it's something that's worn I wanted to create a design that could handle being dropped many times. If I cut the petals too deep then the chances of them breaking off were great.

Yes I like carving with that fancy 'maole' wood. That never did get fixed by a mod.

Thank you Joepaul. A power drill is a dentist drill that turns over 400,000 rpm. Technically it is turning so fast that's it's sandblasting the wood. It's also referred to as an etcher or engraver. It will engrave glass, stone and metal also. image.jpeg

Thanks Nomad. I sort of messed up this colour but yes that's the dye that leaves that glowing colour. It's really nice stuff.

Try sending a PM to a mod, specifically asking for the change. It may have got missed. You can see who is a mod by looking at the title under the avatar.
