  • geese landing WIP

This is a piece a friend asked me to carve for him...not clear whether it should go in Bird/Animals or here. When finished it will be two geese landing, and small scale so it can go on his desk. Birds are about 4" long with a wingspan of about 7". The rough sketch has already changed, with the bird higher in the air recalibrating his landing-pulling up to glide across his buddy. At least that's what I have in my head!

Well, this took forever, and I hate the acrylic stands. I'm thinking of knocking them off and starting over. The whole idea was to have the stands be "invisible" and not intrude on the piece, but I seem to have failed miserably. I think I will remove them and carve stands from basswood and stain them the same color as the base.

How about replacing them with some carved cattails or deadwood stickups and attach the geese as if they are just brushing the tops as they land?

I like Doug's idea but I would do it out of brass for a strong yet delicate look imo

nice carving btw I like it!

I have to agree good carving but, not sure of the base, I like Silver and dust idea brass.

if you made the cat tails you could run brass to mount the geese, Copper sulfate, is used in the industry to make copper - brass - bronze looked aged, it puts on the green patina, used with heat, it prematurely ages the brass,, cheap heavy brazing rod could be bent so the geese could be mounted, and be virtually invisible in the cat tail leaves. which could be done of thin brass almost like a foil..

                Nice job on the geese

Just black wire or paint it to match the cattails, then it wouldnt show that much and seem the geese are landing in the marsh. Just a idea, one thing for sure your geese look great! Tn~
