  • Too young to play with knives

After Mike's success with this little project by Janet Cordell in issue #63, I decided to give it a try. It is a wonderful exercise in doing a young face that doesn't look like an old cowboy. I used the pattern in the article, and if you try one, watch the chin, and how the patterns match up from front to side.
I think it took me longer to sand than it did to carve. I don't normally sand my carvings. I also used 5/8" dowels, and magnets to attach all the limbs. Her angle on the leg post didn't seem right to me. image.jpegimage.jpeg
The handle on the knife is some Amboyna burl, and is about my favorite wood for a beautiful handle. My Get A Grips are my go to knife now though.

    Carve safe, Tom
If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.

Nice, Tom, both the knife and the carving.

You've done a great job on that one Tom, ...but I think you're a little old to start playing with dolls.... .
now that knife is another matter; ...Beautiful piece of wood!

Well done, Tom, and you avoided the "old cowboy" face nicely!

That's a bang up piece of work you've got there Tom. Very nice. That's a pretty novel approach to making the joints as well, should tickle the imagination of a few people on the forum. Love the handle on the knife was well. I'd probably spend more time admiring the knife than I would carving with it.

I have to have one of those knives with that handle, Tom, if your selling them! You know me...I'm an old knife collector! Send me an email if you can make me one!

Thanks Wayne, I thought just one wouldn't hurt, and it was a neat project. I did those little magnetic cowboys while back. Maybe I'm addicted.

Thanks Arthur, yep, not many wrinkles in this one.

Tinwood, these joints do work really well, and one doesn't have to worry about rubber bands rotting. Amboyna is really beautiful wood, but getting way too expensive.

Thank you Brandant, I could have done magnets on the gambler.

Thanks for taking a look Bob. Are you sure you need another knife?

Hi Merle,, thanks for stopping by, I always appreciate your comments.

                            Thanks all, carve safe. Tom
