  • Throw away wood piece

koa bowl.jpg I go and dig out all the throw away wood from my neighbor who only uses the wood that is perfect and will make major money. I grab this piece going into the fire wood pile. I made this curly koa wood bowl. I do not have lathe so this was hard work....plus filling all the holes and sanding.....yiks major work!!!. But not to bad for a first time. Major learning in the filling hole and crack dept. I have a couple more bowls I am working on....also but I got a feeling I am not to thrilled about this kind of wood working.

That is a beautiful piece of wood and the fact that you were able to produce such an outstanding bowl without a lathe shows just how talented you are Dileon.

What a beautiful bowl, and without a lathe . . . That must have taken some serious time. A wonderful piece of art.

You're headed into dangerous territory my friend!! Next thing you know you'll have a lathe and be turning these out by the dozens. (and with all that KOA around, who could blame you!) This means you'll be splitting your time between carving and turning!!

That is s seriously beautiful piece of wood, and you 'don'er proud'... it is gorgeous!

Actually in the beginning I thought I would love this kind of new learning and working with wood, lathe or no lathe.....I really find myself not wanting to go into the shop and finish the work..... I noted the last few days that I hope that I finish
the other two bowls before moving on. I really need the lessons in filling cracks. filling decay wood areas, filling knots so they look ok..... But I do not get that I want to go in shop feeling and do this,.... as I enjoy wood carving very much. I would although like to perhaps engrave on these bowls or doing something else besides fill and sand perhaps in the future???? I do not know....these bowls will be gifts later on. My neighbor he can make up to 15,000 dollars on his bowls but he is a master pro.....and he can go out to the big island and cut his own trees.....I can hardly walk...so getting good Koa is not something I can do..... also it is noted that out of the 8 people who are selling koa today.....7 have closed down.....Koa will become a thing of the past? .So I was thinking give the bowls to the kids perhaps in the later years they will be worth big money and they can sell them....who knows....just wishful thinking.

Actually I do not know if it is the finish or my bad photos but I wish I could show the transparent shine of curly part of wood....that is the only thing I was thrilled about. I need to sand and lacquer this one a few more times...perhaps take it out in the sun and shoot it...with my camera. As my son got me an iphone and I am learning how to use that darn thing, not easy for an old fart like me....so that is my first shot.

Actually they will be wrapped and give as gifts to my kids....sort of like a heirloom thing. Koa is become a rare bird in the islands, the future all woodcraft men say it will no longer be around in a few years. Curly koa is super rare bird....so I was delighted to get my hands on a few pieces cracks and all....smile.

Bob I am never sure if it is craftsmanship or pure artistic insanity that you take a throw away piece of wood because the log is no good and try to do something with it. LOL

Yes major time put into it......but to much repetitive boring stuff....like filling and refilling and sanding holes... I had to use CA and Lacquer sand sealer....wearing a double mask system and that dust in the air and in my shop .....to much worries in sanding it down. Sanding both that stuff is deadly....in my opinion. Even going outside and doing it....major worries that it was getting in my eyes and breathing it a little bit.

thanks Claude and Author.... I been running up to the neighbor and asking ten thousand question about doing this, great learning experience I am sure he is sick of seeing me...LOL but yes it was great to get something that shows off the curly koa.
