Beautiful wood and great job! I have done one a hand carved bowl from walnut. One was enough. Turnded out well but not something I would carve again for pleasure.

Great work Di! You should be proud. I have seen bowls with carved letters--usually sayings both religious and non. I'm sure you could incorporate Hawaiian folklore and/or sayings into your work. I can understand about koa becoming harder to get. But enjoy it while it lasts. And if you're worried about the dust hazards, maybe you can switch to another wood. Can you do glue-ups of pine? If you were turning on a lathe, it could become dicey. But since you're carving the bowls by hand, you can mix woods for different color/pattern effects.
Again, Great work! I always appreciate the hidden treasures nature gives us in what appears to be the ugliest pieces of wood.
