  • Gnome House - willow bark

I have tried different types of bark and so far cottonwood - which is harder to find in Toronto - and willow bark work the best. Just finished two gnome houses...
The one of the dark background has a bit of wood stabilizer on it and a bit of alcohol as there were some small holes on the back - possible insects... microwaved first, alcohol wash and wood stabilizer.
    Enjoy

the willow bark house came out great. Thumbs up. How thick is the willow bark?, just wonder if it gets as thick as CW bark

I agree with Joepaulbutler! I also have the same question.

Has to depend on the species of willow. Just has to. That's nice carving with enough depth.
Been a few cut this year around the village, 16" - 24", and the bark can't be more than 1" thick.
Cottonwoods here with dead tops have the thickest bark. I've seen 4" and better along the Zippermouth River.
They keep breaking off, really smooth, at the butt.

Are both carvings from the same type of bark? They appear very different.

I'll start by saying both carving are on the same type of bark... except one is lighter than the other which had some insect on the back so I put some wood cleaner/sealer on it - color is different.
Bark thickness is about 3"... there are certain willow trees that have very thick bark, just could not find many. I take the bark from dead / fallen trees and sometimes the bark is barely 1"... sometimes is 3 - 3 1/2" thick.
