Met the clients over the weekend. While I was with them I put a piece of paper on the section where this will go and did a quick sketch, they liked it. Brought my "pattern" home, layed it on some 3/4 inch Spanish Cedar ,traced it and cut it out and roughed in one of the roses last night. Today I cut out the long sprays,,and carved the rest of the roses, leaves and the long sprays.A bit of touch up and it's done.
After spending a couple of months on the trees,,this one evening and a day job, start to finish was a welcome relief.
As I said the piece is in Spanish Cedar,,3/4 inch thick,,and the sprays are only 1/4 inch thick. It's in 3 pieces,42 inches wide. I had to keep it so thin because where this is going I was lucky to have this much wood to work in. Sure,,I would have loved to carve a bunch of roses like the bar panel,,but here it's just a very shallow relief. Still ,,I think it reads O.K. from the front,,the side kills it,,but it'll work fine where it's going. There's only so much you can do with so little wood especially if you need to show something that is more spherical in nature like a rose blossom.
Now I'll just have to keep it around a few days till I call them to let them know it's done. They might just think I had one of these sitting on my shelf at the shop that matched the sketch I did.
P.S..We've talked about composition before,,and when I came back to look at the post I noticed two triangles appearing. One occurs if you connect the centers of the Roses,,the second is the basic shape of the underlying leaves with the point at the top. So its really two overlapping triangle used in the way you would make a 6 pointed star,( that's a Jewish symbol,,and this is going in a Catholic Church ,,Hah!) anyway,,,I also included my beloved "S" lines in the long sprays. I think they're sorta' graceful looking. As long as they liked it I'm happy. But I thought it might be interesting to take notice .
