  • WIP Greenman in butternut

I have a Greeman pattern that I worked up some time ago. I have woodburned it and now I am finally gettingwround to carving it. I had a peice of butternut that is 10-3/4"x7-3/4"x 2" to make it out of. here is a picture of the start (about 3 hrs of steady chopping). Also I am including the pattern if anyone wants it, just give credit where credit is due for the pattern please. Thanks for looking.

Looking good so far! I'm sure it is gonna continue. Maybe I'll see it at Leiper's Fork.

          Re: WIP Greenman in butternut

Looks like you're off to a very good begining Gary and like Bonnie said, "It's all yours". When I can create my own design that sorta brings everything full-circle as a carver so I guess that you have arrived.

The first picture so perfectly shows what I'm always telling the kids in my class who are trying to learn how to carve faces (mainly woodspirits) ...to start off with the nose (hightest point on the face) and the eye wells (lowest points on the face, then base everything around them. Seems to drive home the point of carving in an orderly fashion for beginers that makes sense to them (and me!)

          Look forward to the progression!

            Re: WIP Greenman in butternut

Thanks for all the kind comments.
The biggest challenge to this carving is using a preconceived pattern. 90% of the carving that I do is done from scratch, no pattern, I make it up as I go along. I usually start carving and just kind of let the carving emerge, so this is different for me.
PS Doug I hope to meet you at Leipers Fork!
            Thanks again!

Nice pattern, will save it for a future project, never done a GM yet. Bill

                      Re: WIP Greenman in butternut

Looks like a challenging project with all the undercuts involved with doing leaves. I've only done a leafy woodspirit once so I can appreciate the work you have ahead of you.
