Nice Job Di! When I was a kid in Honolulu, we had a tiki made from a palm tree. It finally decomposed in 1990! It travelled everywhere with us. Again, great job!

Beautiful work, Di! The finish really brings out the wood colors.

While I wouldn't want his dental bill, that is one nice mask!

Mark it is the hardwood, Hawaiian monkeypod which has a major grain pattern often going from white to brown to black grain patterns, .....because monkeypod has a bad name because it is used in Asia for cheap tourist to sell items. It is one tree that grows huge. But many people will not buy if they find out it is monkeypod. For that reason we often name it ....Hawaiian rainforest tree....

All finished, lacquered and in flight to its new home. I always send the story with the carved item....although I did leave out the part that this is the God ...that they used to do the human sacrifice too..... that is what I call too much information. This is for a tiki collector....they wanted something super Hawaiian mythology type.

The carving seems to be coming along nicely. I thought, what if you added something clear (plexiglass, etc) then hit with colored light, might really set it off. ??????

I need to redesign the top upside down diamond in the helmet, it is out of wack, add the nose holes which need to be large or flared do to his angry look.... angry look is hard to define...., and do the teeth area. I have mixed feelings about this work at this point as I know it will be a major sanding job....in the end. The eyes are weird but the original tiki has these type of eyes....so will stay with the look....note that tiki sold at Christy's for millions... not that long ago. To bad that ....you have to be dead to make good money on your work is another thought.

Nice progress Di, and a unique piece to follow. Thanks for posting and it is something of interest to me. Not knowing, your "enhancement" feature doesn't detract from it...

Got the shape and need to do the cleanup and ...ready for next step and detail work. This photo shows a light color wood, this wood has very deep colors of a grain of browns and black.......I am hoping it will not take away from the work when I apply a finish I had no intention of cutting throw the mouth to an open area....some how I miss measured and cutting deeper the chisel went through... I had thoughts of closing off the area...but since this is a mask I guess it does not matter, although now I have to really highlight other areas such as the eyes. for composition reasons.

Yea he is ....right now it it is an issue to keep him mean looking .....Most all Hawaiian tikis from the old days were trying to scare other people landing on the islands....something to the effect we are going to throw you in the volcano or feed you to the shark god effect.
