  • Moderately Obese Snowy Owl crossed with Angry Bird

This was intended to be one of Doug Linker's owls . . . but my attempt to copy that design went badly off the rails at an early stage.

Thus . . . I just decided to try and salvage the mangled block of wood with my own design. I like him.

Nice recovery, Rontana. The little fellow came out nice. I usually sacrifice one or two until I get a good outcome and then carve some from that point. However, maybe I should start thinking "recovery" as you did.

im not seeing the original that inspired it, only this tone. and i am glad for that, because i can totally enjoy looking at how this turned out to be instead of comparing it to something else. this one by itself is a very good looking standalone !

Thanks everyone. Funny thing . . . the pieces that end up being the most fun for me usually seem to be recovery jobs. I suspect that (somewhere in my head) there's no self-imposed pressure to "get it right" if I just wing it.

Fine work, just a really cold sunrise. Owls and other birds (grouse) up here can fluff themselves up
with the bitter damp cold just before sunrise. Just like this morning in fact.

Not being concerned about how close you came to the original, this is a fine carving

Looks like a great save to me. I like how the wings flare out.
If I took the time to fix all my mistakes, I wouldn,t have time to make new ones.
