  • Born on a mountain top in.......

This little guy was carved while waiting to get my oil changed. Like a lot of our forum members I take my knife, glove, thumb guard, and a project to keep me busy whenever I leave the house just for long waits like this one was. I use a Flexcut Carvin' Jack.

It was carved from a 1" x 2" x 4" piece of southern basswood. I laid the acrylic finish on pretty heavy to hide the imperfections in the wood. It's top coated with one diluted coat of Delta Ceramcoat Instant Age varnish.

He's cute! When you go out and carve.. how to you keep control of all the chips? I've been wanting to take something with to whittle on too..but afraid of leaving a chippy mess. And have you ever had problems of folks being worried your out in public with a sharp knife? Thats been one of my worries too.. :S

He's adorable Eddie....looks like he's "hiding" something! I admire anyone who can carve something so cute in such a short time. I am sooooooooo slow!

Marci....they have canvas aprons with a curved plastic tube in the bottom that is removable. When the tube is inserted, it forms a "pocket" to hold all the chips....I use it constantly, and for those who carve in their laps.....it's the perfect thing. I got mine as a gift, but I know they have them in a lot of the carving catalogs....Treeline, for sure. Bonnie

Eddy .. you crack me up ! .. What a honest, down to earth statement most of us would never admit ..

That is wonderful .. The figure is really neat Eddy and you did a good carving and painting job ..

Thanks so much for the carving and honesty worth a lifetime ..

Thanks for a good laugh ..

          Gene

Marci .. I do alot of carving like Eddy on the move and I carry all my tools and pieces in a simple fishing box you can get for around $9.00 at Wal Mart ..
It works great and I simply catch the chips in the box and empty it later ..

Thanks one and all! All your comments and kudos are very much appreciated.

Good idea on both the apron and the box. I try to find the largest magazine available. no problem at Goodyear but my dentist's receptionist has given me the evil eye a couple of times. I don't care how careful you are when the chips are flying they don't always fall where you want them to.... come to think about it that's a pretty good analogy on life too!

Good job Eddy! I carve every where I have to sit and wait. I usually just pull up the nearest waste basket and set it between my legs. As for folks being concerned, no problem. Their only concern seems to be, to want to know how long I have been carving. I don't know if thats a compliment or code words for them thinking I am a crappy carver. I suppose the weirdest place I have ever carved was while sitting in the truck, stuck in traffic.
Again, nice job on the carving Eddy. Tom H

Now wait just a minute, mister! Are you tryin' to tell me you've never carved while sitting in a stall in a Wal-mart bathroom? Or in the hospital emergency room while the doctor pulls a truck fuse out of your cousin's nostril? Or in the "10 items or less" lane at Safeway behind a woman with three screaming kids and two carts stuffed with Twinkies? Is that what yer tellin' me?

Tom! I think that we've got a Jeff Foxworthy on this forum with us! Cats pa's post sounds more like a "You ain't a carver if you ain't....."

Hey Eddy, looks kinda like we hijacked your thread. Didn't mean to, but maybe we should start a new thread that gets us to post the places we whittle and carve and the interesting things that happen while doing so. This could be fun.....Tom H
