Pinhead

So as My first ever proper carving project I thought I would go for something Easy
Here is My follow up thread to my Intro thread.
Pinhead started out as a 4"/100mm block of Lime.
Not happy with the lines over the head, might try burning them in with a fine tip, any help or critique more than welcome. Not sure what proper carving project means but you have done a real good job. You may want to spend some time reworking the eyes. You need to start with a dome before you create eye lids and eye ball.

I think this video presents the concept in an easy to follow way.

Hmm, interesting challenge! You really have a nice carving there so far. What are your plans for a finish? If you are staying light with it, I almost think the burn lines might be a bit much, be too distracting. Looking at the photo of pinhead, the lines are defined by the light hitting them. I am thinking your carving might react the same way. Burning does help remove fuzzy bits, but keeping the tip right in the bottom of the groove so as not to darken everything might be tricky. If you are going to add a wash of color that will add tone and depth to the lines, I almost feel that is the way to go. I am sure you will get more ideas, try them all and let us know what you think.

Thanks for the replies and the link, never done eyes before so that will help a lot.

Cant decide wether to leave it with just a oiled finish or just a light whitewash over Him! some more test need to be done I think with just deeper cut lines first to see how that looks

Your carving is well done. If you are going to cut in the grid lines like your example you could use a thin diamond needle file. They are inexpensive and worth having in the tool box.

Maybe you could carve the eyes from a dark wood like Gaboon Ebony and inlay them.

Looks like you are off to a very fine start. Pihead looks to have taken every ugly pill in the store hehehe. Nice job on the re-creation.

Thanks all, I have done some shaping to the head and also worked the nose area a bit more, also started on the shoulders part, this is just out of pine as it will be painted black with the cutouts filled with lime.
