    Hi, Chuck, you Certainly chose a Challenging Project and it looks like your are up to the Challenge. Using Oak is a Challenge by itself. Looking forward in watching your Progress. Merle

        Yes I do have a picture, if you want I'll send some Oak to work it on. If you have any old WCI mags it was I believe in 2010 Summer. Along with a large Trout that I am working on in Red Oak.
        Cheers

            If you are like me, I do the impossible to see if it can be done. Scary at times, hard at times, I can not do it at times...but I learn, I break through and in the end, it was a very creative journey worth all of it in the end. Working in hard hardwoods makes medium hardwood like carving in butter.

                Chuck;

                Looks good to me you're well on the way to a nice relief carving. I've done several reliefs in oak and I've always been happy with the results. Maybe it's considered cheating, but i use a router to take the background down to the desired height, let's met get to the detailed carving faster.

                    If I were to use my router, I probably tear the Heck out of things. I used a 3/8 " Drill on the drill press, then close to the form drill was 3/16" . And I don't think it is cheating when the wood is so hard too.

                      Chuck;

                      i've messed up a couple of patterns using the router, lose track of the background areas and route through the pattern. an "ah shucks" (cause i don't ever swear in the shop lol ) moment. Sometimes its repairable other times it's firewood. I've started outlining and cross hatching the background in red before i start routing. Larger bits for the open areas then smaller bits to get closer to the line.

                          I use various Wood Drilling Forstner Bits. I have a major collection that was gifted to me for my running to his house and teaching him what to do next on a major carving huge carving... on this one make sure you measure out the pointed end. The drill press as stated above, and even a drill bit wrapped in tape so I do not go too deep. I have dremel mini drill bits to help with small areas. The great thing about making holes is that it gives the hardwood space to easily chisel out and also a depth marker about how far I want to chisel in. Yes great to chisel the whole thing, but with some hardwood that could take months...

                              HI Di., Thanks, previously, I had run a drill too deep and had to change my whole aspect of the carving. Now I have a drill stop on the new drill press I have.. works great!! And I now about the time involved to chisel and gouge it, But makes it all worth while with the looks too. But my hands do make me wish I would just power carve it all.
