I like this whole concept of wood on a framed work....it is very interesting and a whole lot easier than doing a full sculpture. Very creative work in progress.

All you have to do is trace the photo onto a background and get some paint. I think you could do it ...as it is a very simple design. If you go this way ....and need some advice..I taught beginner painting to those who swore they had no talent. Painting is just like carving..it is seeing the shapes. Something to ponder.
How long would that take, paint, paint brushes, cleanup, what if I really enjoy painting what do I do with all these fricking carving tools, this is commissioned but I gave JuNelle my girls I had a crush on in 6th grade rate, how much time do I want to invest just because she was cute 50 some years ago.
Thanks for the kind offer of instruction.

What if you are a better painter than you are a carver...would you really give up carving? seriously...why not do both? LOL Another question what is time and learning fact matter in your work? In the end, In my own opinion for me... I find that time spent is rather meaningless years down the road when you look back at it all. Still pondering a moment of thoughts .... sorry I am probably giving you a headache ....
My Dad always told me I was a carrier because I never get headaches……….
I start my day with coffee and the morning news. Then either a couple hours of pickle ball or a 8 mile bike ride. Three days a week I’m off to the golf course two days a week I do domestic chores next. The carving club meets weekly and the artist guild twice a month. Currently teaching two nights a week and have three carvers I have meet through Facebook book that I’m mentoring on their journey. And my wife still has expectations for some of my time to help her “fold laundry”. I’m not saying I couldn’t squeeze in another hobby but not sure it would be to my advantage.
As for photo editing it has become stupid easy you just use your finger to highlight the general area and touch the edit button it removes the object and rebuilds it based on surroundings parts of the photo. To convert to painting you switch edit screens and select the painting style you want and one click it’s done. You can go in and tweak for hues and such but don’t see my self doing that.

Ed, in considering your (fun) options for executing this fun project, maybe the prime consideration should be: What did JuNelle ask for: Does she want a carving of herself on the photo or does she want a work of art?
Respectfully, just food for thought.Arthur

Nebraska If you have an iPhone that is 4 years old or less (roughly), it can lift a subject from the photo...background.

Sat down at the bench yesterday to start this carve. It took a few minutes of struggling to remove wood before I realized my colossal screwup. The grain was running left to right not up and down. Well onto JuNelle 2.0 this version will be carved in basswood.
