Before adding paint NA Indian

Here is the completed carving of the NA Indian I shared with everyone earlier. I will be painting some of the carvings but keeping the colors very light. I'm mixed about the buffalo headdress. I tried small and and large horns and this is what I came up with. He has strong features as you can see from his brow, chin and prominant nose. The neck piece and beads were an experiment. I may be posting the finished product later tonight

Patrick,I am very impressed.The detail is supurb and has just a strong look about him.Tell me,are you going to stay with the basswood vrs.the birch or are you just mixing it up a bit.I personally really enjoy and learn from your carvings.Thanx,Davy

Patrick,man oh man, you sure nailed that one right on, I don't think I've seen one any better, congratulations on a beautiful piece of art. To me, it would be a shame to put any paint on him, that's just my opinion.

I typically go with what's available. I'm low on logs so I had picked up several pieces of basswood to do some wall hanging style carvings. I seem to carve either poplar or birch during the warmer months. All I have left is some raw basswood logs which are not my favorite...the dried basswood is much better.

Too late Cliff, I just finished painting him. I think you'll like him just the same. I'm waiting for the sealer to dry so I can put satin wax to him to bring out the detail. I'll be posting the finished carving soon.

Hey Patrick, he is just wonderful he does have very strong features and is a fearsome foe. I like the buffalo headdress and the horns look so natural. You are really getting good at these Indian carvings. Looking forward to seeing him painted.

Thanks everyone for your praise and encouragement - means a lot hearing from your peers. Well here he is painted. This is the closest I have ever come to doing a bust but he's designed to be hung on the wall. He's got a mean look to him but it adds character

he turned out very nice, patrick :-) not meant as critique, but only sharing an observation, he looks quite joung, despite the wrinkles you added....
i love the way you painted him in the soft brown colors. can you expand a little how you did that ? with stains ? or with oil colors, or acrylic... i would like try something, maybe even softer, like this too
