Re: Ndn
Very nice job Vince. The first thing I noticed about this carving was the symetry. You don't see carvings often that look like a mirror image from one side of the face to the other. Well done!

Re: Ndn
This is a piece of cottonwood 6" by16". IT is very soft and drys out fast then it starts the spalting process that gives it all that color. Spalting is the beginning of the rotting process. You have to get it before it get to soft and rotted or it will just crumble on you. It likes to do that anyways so you need to take your time and have very sharp tools or it will crush and tear out if your not careful. Patrick, I know I am not ready to do the female face yet but I will try one in the summer some time. As far as beads and chokers and things of that sort, I live on a ndn rez and the locals tell me that is how most think of them and that they are real people that do everyday things like everyone else and that the only time that they dress like that is for pow wows and such so when I get ready to do stuff like that I will do them in full dance dress with painted faces and and dress. I do not know when I will do that part but would like to try soon. Till then they really like the way I portray them now so I keep doing it this way. Thanks for looking and your comments and if you have any more questions feel free to ask. Vince

Re: Ndn
I find it interesting the different approaches we all use to start a carving. It's neat to see how your technique progresses. You've got the face carving down Vince...now start adding some leather or bead work to the neck area and other accessories. Have you tried a female Indian yet...such as Kathy just completed? I want to see you struggle like I have been with female carvings.Wink
