Indian in cherry

I carved this from a cherry tree we had to cut down in our yard last summer.
I used everything from a chainsaw ,mallet tools, power carver, and palm tools to carve this hard piece of wood.
It's 8"x17" painted with oils except the face was left natural.
This was a real challenge because of the wood being so hard and a little bit rotten in some places.I had to use the power carver to get a smooth finish because tools wood just break the wood.

BEAUTIFUL CARVING, one of the nicest Indian carvings I've seen and there have been a lot on here of late. You sure out did yourself on this one, congratulations for sure.

I've carved cherry wood once...and if it was the same type of cherry wood, it was very hard. I'm impressed that you used such hard wood to carve such a fine looking Indian. It looks similar to Jeff Phares Indian with wolf pelt from his book. I tried a similar carving like this...but not nearly as nice.
I see you have it hanging on the wall. Did you cut the cherry in half...and did you hollow it out? I remember the cherry I used checked quite a bit as it dried.

Wow, your Indian in cherry is just fantastic, wonderful carving. I love that you left the face the natural color of the wood. It really compliments the piece. Nice painting too!

It was a very hard wood.
I cut some carving blocks out of the tree.THe tree was about 3 feet across so I cut my blocks and took out the center.I hope it doesn't check. I know it wasn't completely dry .So I covered it in blo hoping it would help slow down the drying.Don't know if that will work but only time will tell.It's been outside the whole time I was carving it ,I just brought it in the house 2 days ago,So far so good.
