Something special

Every so often you get a piece of rare wood , that really makes you wonder how we could be so stupid as to cause their destruction.

This is one of those woods. A friend gave it to me to carve a staff out of it, and it cuts so clean and just takes detail like it was made for it. I have yet to put a chisel or carving knife to it . The twists are being done completly with a draw knife.

I am yet to decide what will be in it when I am finished but right now , I am truly head over heals for the wood.

Hey Ash, looks real good so far, I'm not familiar with the term (draw knife )(stupid question maybe) but I've never heard it before. What kind of wood is it?

Cliff ,

A draw knife is a flat blade knife that has handles on each end. They are used by drawing the blade towards you, to round or square a wood block. Most often used today to make canes or rounds dowels. They were used years ago with spoke staves to make wagon wheels.

Yes , I know the wood. It is a native tree that is now almost gone. It isn't elm.

This piece came from an old barn.

It is wormy chestnut . The upper part was really rough so I put a shroom on the top. It just seemed to fit.
