inserting glass sliver eyes in carved dolls

I am whittling dolls, like queen anns, grodernthals, penny woodens. And I ahve finally figured out how to make a nose.. its just a little thing. BUt I am having a dickens of a time trying to insert these little slivers of glass and full eyes into the doll so it loos right. They used to do it, but I cant find any instruction other than a gouge was made above and below and the sliver slipped in and repositioned using a wax stick..
I figured out that I could just press and E bead in trhe balsa, but I would really like to use the micro glass eyes.......
