I thought this was over with,,nope. Never dawned on me that the donor of the organ,,known as the Koop organ ,,is none other than Dr.C Everett Koop ,former Surgeon General of the U.S.. He donated the organ in memory of his late wife.
Now by invitation I've been asked to attend the opening unveiling and recital being that I am the person responsible for the "....Hand carved quarter sawn white oak Medallions...a special feature..." and hopefully meet the Doctor.
Didn't have a clue,,,funny how things turn out and who I ultimately end up working for. I think it's pretty cool!

Ahhh,,,since that worked ,,I think,,,here are some shots of the organ being built that they sent me. Pretty neat woodworking don't you think? Man,,I just love this stuff!. Imagine building that thing in your shop,,,WOW,,why didn't they let me at all that wood on the organ itself? Or do carvings on those brackets,,or the panels,,,it's killing me.

Whatever,,I'm still a lucky guy ,,doing things I never would have, nor could have imagined. How did I get myself into this world? It's too cool!

I don't know if this will work but I'll try.

This is the preliminary layout for the new custom organ where my carvings went. O.K. so my carvings turned out to only be the borders for the poster here as they are not installed yet,,but it's still pretty neat somehow.

    Re: organ medallions

No I didn't forget to finish these. Just been a bit sidetracked. But here they are. Made up my own brew to stain them,,had to match a sample they sent. And they were specific on the final gloss,,,not too much,,not too little,,bla, bla, bla. So I matched that too.

Turns out they seem to like them so much that these pieces will be used in posters advertising the renovations being done in the church.Go figure! With everything else there,,they picked these things. So I had to do some shots for them and they say they can use them,,so I'm anxious to see what comes out. They are supposed to send me a poster to hang in my studio. Might be cool to see it and what THEY come up with.
Tomorrow or Friday,,off they go to Philadelphia...

mark, thanks for sharing that link. it was very pleasure to look... as i said previously, churches in usa are so very differeent from how the look here, so for me, it is also very interesting to get a glimse into your culture.... why the architekt lets you carve the pieces...well,may be he wants compare with a real carving in hand..maybe something more is coming in on for you :-)...

    Re: organ medallions

I've just received some pics of the actual organ itself as it's being built. I can't quite figure out how to get them to load here because it's quite impressive. But I can give you a link to the company building the organ. Their site has some wood working on it that makes me wonder why the Architect let me carve these pieces. And you will see some incredible churches as well. And if you go to the furniture section,,you'll see a really neat carving of a serpent on the side of an organ.
Well ,,it boggles my mind to say the least,,as well as giving me a greater view of where it's possible to go with this carving thing. Those churches,,organs,,and embellishments had to be done by someone!

    Welcome to R.A. Colby

    Re: organ medallions

Thank you Bob! Yes,,they remind me also of Celtic knots. Those seem to be fairly popular and thought everyone might enjoy these as well.Just variations on designs someone might be able to use somewhere.
What is it about even these simple designs that is fun to look at? Your eye just keeps going round and round looking at nothing in particular. I think they're neat.
Now in this case the square and cross is considered an Old Testament design. I don't really understand that. But the trifoil,, based on the triangle is New Testament which symbolically represents the Trinity,,that I get. And the third ,,well,,I guess is just an interesting design in itself. But even here,,with the image of a cross with the interior ring is a common Celtic design as well. That inner ring though is usually done in a rope pattern.I only know that as I have done a large Celtic cross loaded with knot patterns and the rope ring.
    Glad you liked them Bob,,thanks.

Nice work Mark. Those medalions look super, like oversized Celtic knots! LOL

Love watching your progress, even on the simple jobs!
