  • Boot Rack

I mentioned in the "What's on your Bench" thread that I was working on a boot rack. I finally finished the carvings and thought I would share. All the work has been done in cedar and is going to be left unfinished.

The wizards are the "5 minute" wizards from last issue. The fist took 10 hours and the second 5 hours. Ivan the Terrible, based on the same principle, only took 4 hours to complete. I might get it down to 5 minutes if I carve 20,000 more, lol.

    Re: Boot Rack..Cont

Each spike for drying the gloves is made from a 3/4" cedar nailing strip. I found the cedar quite carvable for the most part as long as I didn't want a lot of small details.

Here are the rest of the peices.

Excellent work! No protective finish whatsoever???

            Re: Boot Rack

I left it as raw cedar with the idea that cedar resists rot. Being an indoor rack it should end up being dry most of the time except during snow storms and the like.

Sounds like it will work. Might even wear nice and shinny as it gets older...

                Hi Kitaye,

Somehow I missed your thread. Your five minute wizards are great. the 2nede one took half the time but looks nicer, go figure.

Very nice boot rack, but isn't it hard to balance the boots on the end of the posts. LOL!

                  Re: Boot Rack

You hang 'em upside down on the posts so the water drips off and they dry inside. The cats trying to balance an the posts are funny though, lol.

I know there is a learning curve for everything new but I wasn't expecting it to be 50%. I agree though, the second one does look better.

                        Re: Boot Rack

Hi Sam, thanks. Yes, one of the pieces is modeled after a chess piece knight. It was really hard to get much definition of shape and character into the little 3/4" space but it turned out pretty good.
