  • Ruff! Ruff! ... Ruff! Ruff!

Almost didn't get this project completed. Last Fall when we adopted our dog from the Small Breed rescue of East Tennessee I asked them if they could use some of the dogs that I whittle and I was invited to send them some. This spring following a special event they contacted me and said that if I was up to it they'd love to have some more. They very quickly ran out of the ones that I originally sent and had multiple requests for more. This is a great organization that does outstanding work so I really wanted to help them out.

My goal was to get a dozen carved before I take my Fall vacation but with Gustav, Hanna and now Ike I didn't know if I was going to make it. This morning, with Ike headed in the opposite direction I finally found the time to paint and mount the nametags.

The dogs are whittled from various grades of southern basswood, some better than others. None are the same, depending on the board thickness, knots, grain and soft spots. All of came from a local sawmill about a mile away from my cabin. I finished them with washed acrylics and watered down waterbased matte poly.

Now to get them in a box and in the mail....

      Hi Eddy,

Those are adorable. It's no wonder they run out of them so quickly.

I think it's nice that you rescued your dog. My wife rescues and fosters cats.

hummmm. I think I ought to carve a couple of them again and take them to my local pet shop. They have everything else in there.

Good looking pack of hounds you have there!!

Ron.... If I had my way I be at the pound everyday. It pulls at my heart strings every time I see one of those advertisements wanting you to adopt a pet. There's only so much you can do on retirement pay but somehow the head has a hard time explaining that to the heart!

Thanks Mark.... It just goes to show that everyone can do something... Even the smallest things add up.

Thanks Buckskin... I've been whittlin' some of Gene's hound dogs too but the dog tags look and go better on the scotty dogs!

Thanks Catbird.... I do it purely for selfish reasons! I get just as much enjoyment out of giving my whittlin's away as the folks who get them do!!! It's a win-win situation!

Sam... If you're serious about wanting to do something like that why don't you Google "Animal Rescue Ohio" and see what pops up near you. Give them a call and see what kind of fund raising activities they have. The organization that I donate to has reunions for previous adoptions, garage sales and craft fairs. If the organization that you contact has any of these then there is a good chance that they can use your talents and you'll be helping the animals in your area. We live in Florida and donate money to the local SPCA where previously we've gotten our pets. The reason that I've tried to help out these folks in Tennesse is that's where we obtained our current pet and they went out of their way to place the dog with us and accomodate us even though we were from out of state. Absolutely fantastic people!

Those are really neat. I can see why they ran out of them as costumers must have been impressed with the little fellows...as many of us are as you can tell. Great viewing your carvings again Eddy.
