  • Rolling Pin WIP

Ok well my new vice showed up fed ex this afternoon and once it got here I never left the shop. Well after I was done just messing around with my new carving vice from lee valley I decide to make something so I started this. I was digging through my pile of rolling pins and this woodspirit just poped out at me. I have no idea where he is going, just carving him the way he says to, no patterns. The new wip rolling pin, let me know what ya think of him. As I said before I am carving him the way he tells me to, and I am no dentist but how'd I do on my firts try of carving teeth?

I will keep you all posted as he goes along.

      Hey Carl;

I like the job you done with this fella. Funny little smirk he's got on his face makes his nose perfect for this guy, Good job on the teeth for your first time, too. Keep up the good work.

I'm not sure if I'm impressed with the carving or all that hair you have (giving away my age). Never tried a rolling pin before. I expect the wood is pretty hard. The apron is a good idea. I ruin more shirts with carving. Good job on the teeth.

Nice job Carl, the teeth are a very nice addition and you seem to have mastered them well for a first time.

I was so tired that I forgot to mention I grow my hair and have it cut and donated to wigs for kids.

The rolling pins are hard, normaly hard maple, my mom took the pics so thats why they seem random and don't get the whole shop in them. I will be busy most of the day might get in a little carving tonight.

I wear that apron mainly when I am turning, otherwise the stream of steady chips causes alot of damage to t shirts, only time I have wrecked a shirt carving is when I was sharpening on my tormek and well I leanded over it to far, well it ripped the shirt right off. The tormek was just fine, I knew it had this kind of power and should have been paying more attention lol.

You're doing fantastic on your carving and the teeth are looking good too. It's refreshing to see your long hair! (giving away my age too!) Looks like you're having a fun time!

                    Carl, very nice carving.

All that wood you have hoarded and you use your mother's rolling pins!

Hey guys thanks for the comments, Jim she wants me to teach her how to carve them.
I get most of the supply from estate sales, garage sales and also second hand stores like the good will, all great places to find them if anyone wants to give it a try.

                            Re: Rolling Pin WIP

I have been to busy to get much done but tonight I started to get some hair added, worked his face alot more, started to add some flow to his beard. I took some side view pics of his profile, I should get alot of his hair and beard added tomarrow and I think i'll add his eyes.

I had to remove those wood screws that where holding the vise down and added some bolts with washers and a 2x4, the screws where only there so I could use this vise untill I bought some bolts. If anyone is looking for a carving vise, this one from Lee Valley is amazing it is really versitile and just very well made. Ya guys up in Canada really do make some great products, my lathe chuck is a Oneway made in Canada.

Here is a better pic of the vise Kevin, I am planing to add some more shelve/holder things as I call them, for the vise accessories and I also plan to add a permanent strop across one side of the bench probably 2" wide and some kind of a cup holder for my coffee.

Forgot to ask this earlier, Anyone have any ideas on how to clean out the area between his top and bottom teeth?
I have been taking really little bits with the tip of my detail but I know if I keep at it this way I will break the tip off in there. The maple is very hard and I am thinking maybe some kind of power carving bit, any help is apreciated.
                              Thanks,
                              Carl
