    Re: Rolling Pin WIP

Thanks for the close up pics of the vice or vise however you spell it lol. It looks like you have a nice set up. How much does a vice like that sell for? I know the Jerry rig is way out of my price range.
The carving is really turning out great and its neat that you now have your Mom interested in carving.

      VeritasĀ® Carver's Vise - Lee Valley Tools
if ya do buy one I would also get this to go with it.
      VeritasĀ® Carver's Screw Hold-Down - Lee Valley Tools
I bought two and plan to either buy more or have my uncle machine me some of these carvers screws. I am sure it is spelt vise, did I spell it with a c someplace not rure lol the spell check never seems to work.

          Re: Rolling Pin WIP

wow, that is quite a mess between the teeth... i think a knife is the last tool i would try if i had to clean that up... if you have such a small one, i would try a u-tool, or a very deep gouge in small diameter... if you dont have such, i would use a rather shallow gouge, like a #5, with small diameter, and first make clean stop cuts under the upperrow of teeth, and then cut towards these stop cuts from the lowerteeth. then do again stopcuts at the lowerteeth and cut against these from upperteeth... this should leave the teeth fairly clean, with a slight ridge in the middle... you can remove that with any small diameter gouge... no knife, knifes do poke, and make mess...

and, as you asked for tip, i think, i would try go deeper with the face. be brave, go deep. make the nose stick out really... push the face a little around the rolling pin, to make it real 3d, now its rather flat... dont do hair detail so early, fix the face first.. hope you find this helpful...

            Re: Rolling Pin WIP

Thanks for the comments Doris much appreciated, I started the teeth with a 3mm #3 and went back and forth with stop cuts exactly the way you suggested. I don't have any small u or veiners that will fit into there this is a very small opening I should have put something for scale into the PICS. Maybe if I go to a deeper sweep like a #5 I will have enough clearance to clean it out.

Thanks for the info on the face I will work on it tonight and post PICS late or in the morning. I did that bit of hair to see how it would look, not like it took any time to do and I can easily carve it away. I will I have to see how deep I can get I was leaving room to make larger eyelids and I also have that carvers screw stuck in there someplace I will have to figure out how far in it is, wouldn't want to hit it.

              Re: Rolling Pin WIP

I was tired of cutting firewood and said forget this that's enough for today I have to go carve some.

I cut his face back and cleaned his teeth out some. Solved the problem of the teeth by using a #5 2mm and under cut the teeth top and bottom then cut up to the stops/undercuts, this gave me enough room to get my 3mm veiner in between the teeth.
Worked down his cheeks and forehead including his brow well everything but his nose, took quite a bit off it seemed to me. I wont post my opinion on this until I have heard some others.

I am thinking the tip of his nose is to flat and I might try and add some wood if I can find a piece to match that area maybe further down the pin I can cut a chunk out and glue it there. I would like to get a more bulbous look to his nose.

Dough , I guess your spell check don't work either.

Forrest and dabul thanks for the comments, and Forrest he already has been talking to me in fact he wont shut up, telling me how to do my work, I'll make him the ugliest woodspirit ever .

They say in order to see real woodspirits you have to be a child or pure of heart, not sure what category I am in. So ya like JD then I was running ours all day today. I do love carving that hard maple makes such a clean cut and takes detail so easy, just a little more effort and a shorter bevel on the tools piece of cake.

Very nice work, Carl. That maple can be real hard stuff to work with, but I agree with you - it sure does pay off. You did a great job getting the teeth down. Kinda reminds me of the old Jimmy Carter charicatures...

Wow, that is a great looking rolling pin carving! Very unique, and you really nailed the teeth so, no worries there.

I just finished my first rolling pin carving today. The wood on mine was not very hard at all. One side carved like a dream but the other was a bit flaky and would chip rather than cut if ya were not careful. But I got the pin at Wallmart, I have heard vintage pins carve better. I would not know I've only been carving for about 2 months now.
