  • save the lion

Need some help here. My mental pix didnt translate to the log. I was trying a big lion head with bigger mane. Its suppose to hang on the wall. But it didnt work. I am thinking of smoothing out the mane to match the head. Its probably life size. thoughts?

What exactly did not work? if ya do get rid of the mane make sure you have enough room for ears i'm thinking swept back ears like the lion is getting ready to pounce or is angry.

      Re: save the lion

Should have added that its a male lion. So it needs a mane.

          Re: save the lion

Beautiful concept. I think perhaps the mane is too "chunky". I would try dividing some of those big chunks to give the appearance of finer hair. Keep studying it....you will come up with a solution.

            Re: save the lion

I like it just the way it is. The chunky mane looks like an old lion that just no longer cares about the grooming ritual.

I like it that way too....looks like the lion is emerging from the wood and his mane is in flux yet!

I think if you look at images of real lions from a similar perspective you will find what you are looking for.

I gotta tell ya': it looks great!

                      Re: save the lion

I think it's fine the way it is. Maybe Leo is just having a "bad hair day".
By the way, what kind of wood is that? It almost looks like eucalyptus, but, I'm not sure. I really like the dark red and the different colors in the mane.
                      Thanks for showing him.

He looks great to me just the way he is. Maybe thinning the chunky mane a bit might give you what you want, but as I said I really like him just the way he is.

I'd guess it's mountain cedar (Laurel?) Great job on the head! If I was working on it I'd take down the back row of the mane, at least enough to remove the sap wood, the rest of the mane would still have the color and I think it would be alot more in proportion. Just my opinion and I know what thats worth. I also know it couldn't hang on my 2X3 walls.
