Now that the ornaments are done and out. Here's an Old World Santa work in progress. I started with a 12 inch tall by 8 wide by 6 deep piece of basswood and did the major roughing out with my large gouges and power carver. I'm not happy with the hat so may end up removing it and glueing up a piece to get the look I want. I plan on using oil paints for the finish. He will be this years Santa gift to my wife, she gets one every year, but this will be the first large santa for her. Will post pics when he's done.

Re: Old World Santa
Thanks woody01 never thought of just a larger fur band that might work. Catbird I think smaller is easier to carve, I put this on a carving arm but it seemed like I spent more time positioning the carving than carving. I ended up holding in my hands and carving as best I could that way. I've done the masks on the carving arm and it worked finr. But in the round seem to be moving the carving more. Maybe it's just me.

Re: Old World Santa
Great start on a really charming piece Old Bear. Your wife will be thrilled with him. I agree with Woody that you have lots of wood to work with on the hat. I was going to suggest the same thing but he beat me to it. I can't wait to see it when you have finished it....
