  • If at first you don't succeed ...

Practice is what I preach and practice is what I do. What is that old management training expression: "Talk the walk, then ,walk the talk!" I take my own advice and practice, practice, practice!

This figure is carved in Butternut, another attempt at capturing the essence of Commander Thomas Kydd, asa: Tom Cutlass. This one I entitle "Borders Away!" Size is 7 1/2" tall.

What a spiffy uniform! Great job Bob. I know your attention to detail really enjoyed carving the decorative fringe thing on his shoulder (no idea what the proper term is).
What kind of gold paint did you use? or did you actually gild the gold parts?

Glad you like him folks, he was a pleasure to do. The epaulette on his shoulder was carved seperately and afixed, the significance denotes a master and commander, not yet a post captain. The gold is Dazzling Metallic, Elegant Finish, paint by Decoart, called Emperor's Gold. The buttons were also carved seperately and painted with it.

I did the arms seperately and the sea service pistol is carved as an extention of the arm, but the Seaman's cutlass is done in two pieces and fitted into the hand grip. The cutlass guard was a real challenge.

I can see I have to work on the face some more to pget the expressions down yet, and perhaps a larger scale might help. I've been studying faces and body structures in Chris Pye's site and books as well as Lynn's site. Though mine is not a characture, the princpals are the same, and I have learned a lot.

Good job, Bob. The hair looks very natural and the detail on the jacket is first rate.

                        Bob,

How is Butternut for carving? Compared to pine or basswood how does it rate? Figure looks good.

                          Hi Bob,

If you're anything, you're consistent. Very nice attention to detail even in the paint.
