LOOKS PRETTY GOOD TO ME. I THINK YOU ARE DOING A GREAT JOB ON HIM. YA MIGHT TAKE A LOOK AT PHIL AND VICKI BISHOPS WEBSITE FOR ADDITIONAL PIRATE IDEAS AS WELL AS HARLEY SCHMITGEN'S AS I SEEM TO REMEMBER A PIRATE THAT EACH OF THEM DID THAT TOOK A LIKING TO THE GOOD CAPTAIN.

Looks like I'm too late. My guess would have been John Malkovich anyhow. That early profile shot got me thinking that way.

Nice job with the clay. I'm going to have to try that clay modeling to work out some thing before I start carving. Been looking the work that Doris does also. The clay "practice" looks very helpful.

Hope you haven't been having any pirate trouble in Walla Walla. They been raiding the wineries up there for "grog"? :-)

oh, lol...i see you certainly had a good laugh from my guess... now who is captn sparrow ? must have missed something,,but he looks like a challenging project for carving, vvery nice...he looks oddly young for a captn, but as said i dont know that guy and his story

and yes, randy, the clay really helps a lot for carving ! try it, dont wait so long with it, like i did for stubbornness

You have a very good-looking pirate there. If they all look like that women would be swamping the boats. LOL

                    Doris,

Captain Jack Sparrow is a rogue pirate in the movie series "Pirates of the Caribbean".
I think you did a great job of portraying him in clay, Tony!

This is a publicity picture of Johnny Depp/Capt. Jack Sparrow:

Doris, Doris, I can't believe you haven't seen "Pirates of the Caribbean" It has to be one of mine and my families favorite movies, in fact my daughter has already claimed this carving when I gets it done.
It is going to be a challenge for sure, can't wait to get started, but I still have some issues to work out before I get started though. I'm going to try one more in clay, just the face, I want to try for a better likeness of Johnny Depp (Doris, he is the actor who played Capt. Jack Sparrow)
I also want to try and capture that crooked, smirk like smile Jack has.

Thats a great picture of CJS, thanks againsthegrain, don't think I have that one.

Orygone, what part of Oregon are you from, must be close if you know W2 wines

thanks agian for playing along and any criticism IS appriciated.
I've gotten some great advise in a PM on fixing the mouth that I'm sure will help on the next mock up of the face.
It's a lot faster and easier to fix in clay now so if you have any sugestions let me hear from you.

                          Thanks

That's going to be quite a carving when its complete. I've never done a pirate before so I look forward to seeing your progress. Lots of challenges with this project. Should be fun to see it unfold.

Not so sure you shouldn't give him a bit of a smile so his gold tooth would show up. Seems like he had one of those. :-)

I live up the McKenzie River a bit from Springfield, OR. Idaho visits to the Grangeville area or cross country trips to go canoeing in Northern MN take me through Walla Walla frequently. I like that country, although WW has certainly grown and moved on up the sophistication ladder. Price of wine is climbing the same ladder. :-)

I agree Randy, that smile you are refering too, is exactly the crooked smirk like smile I was thinking of too and going to try to capture in my next mock up of his face.

I think at last count there are some 80+ wineries in Walla Walla now and still growing. My boss owns a winery and a couple vineyards. One of the perks working for him is I get free wine from time to time and it is very tasty, goes for about $35 a bottle in his tasting room. From what he tells me $100 a bottle in a Seattle restaurant and most recently $300 a bottle in Taiwan (mainly because of the import tax I guess) This week the clients from Taiwan are flying in to tour the winery, that should be interesting as we got about ten inches of snow over the weekend.
