I like to make canoe paddles. Some are carved and some are not. This one is simply painted. I've been wanting to do a loon and put some design in it that would add to the "sense of place" for the person that's getting the paddle (an old friend).
Here's a pic of the design. I spend quite a few hours getting the design right. Have to color to make sure it pleases my eye, overall and balance-wise.
On this paddle, I found a curved red cedar limb (dead branch) and cut a segment for the handle. I worked it down with a gouge and liked the gouge marks so left them.
The design in the back of the loon is my rendition of a famous petroglyph up in the Columbia Gorge called, "She-Who-Watches".
