  • Captain Jack Sparrow, face #2

After working up the captain in clay the first time (pic 1) and not being satisfied with his face I decided to work up another model of just his face focusing on fixing his mouth and hopefully making a better likeness of Johnny Depp.
The mouth is coming along much better, in my opinion, but it’s too early to tell on the likeness yet, not sure if I'll get that.
I’m still working on getting more of that “smirk” he has in his grin then on to his eyes. Anyway I thought I would show the differences that I’ve gotten to this point on Jack #2

      Tony,
Liked your first rendition and I am sure this one will turn out even better. The only area I can see that I would question, in the first workup, is the distance from the lips to the lower chin, it appears that while the chin should retain its shape it needs to be moved up, closer to the lips.

Other than that I'd have to say you have a great likeness there. Keep posting your progress as we are enjoying the journey!! Thumbs Up

I think I have the "Smirk" done but from the last picture I see the left side of the chin and jaw line don't match the right. Wierd because they look like they do from the top view. I tried to pull the left nostril up with the left cheek, but from the last view it look funy too...hmm

Thanks Anthony, I'll need to keep an eye on that area when I add the beard. I think it grew or got longer when I was adding clay for the beard

          Thanks Hi_Ho_Cheersand Ron

            Great Tony,
Your second one is has a much better mouth. I can see buy your pictures you are looking at it in all directions and getting a really good face this time. I can see buy your profile shot that you have good dept to the face and the bottom shot shows that the mouth has a good shape. The smirk gives it a lot of personality. Clay is wonderful you can work out all your problems before you carve it. Great improvement in the mouth Tony.

Re: Captain Jack Sparrow, face #2

Thanks Andy, and a big thanks for the tips you gave me on observing the location of the mouth & lips in relation to the nose & cheek area.
I'm also learning to look at the face from all angles rather then from the top and side.
Next up are the eyes, hopefully I can get capture a bit of personality there too.

Thanks again for the help, much appriciated.

That new mouth looks terrific. I don't know what Johnny Depp looks like, but I liked the more square jawline in the first version.....just a personal observation.

                    Thanks Carl & Joy

Here's few more comparison pictures of where I'm at now...

Technology is great, I pasted my picture next to the picture of a reference picture I'm using and it looks like I need to adjust the eye a little more.

Tony I think you are having way too much fun with the clay. Will you ever stop playing around and get to the real work of caving. I can't wait to him in wood.
