  • Gave the Santa Plate a try.

As gifts for our two daughters, who have their own homes and partners (husbands or significant other), my wife suggested I carve them each a Santa plate from the Holiday Special issue. I used clear White Pine and cut them at 12", shaped the edges and bead and followed the instructions for the rest. I am quite happy with the results. Thanks WCI, for the inspiration. The small Santa ornament is just a time filler in, based on Marks inspirining work.

Those are really nice! I love the happiness of the right Santa.

The ornament is also good. I really like the beard. On the next one may I suggest you try tapering the beard down to a point that echos the shape of the top of the hat. Just a thought...

I looked at that article for some time because I liked the way Santa was set into the wood. Yours turned out very well Bob....your quite a painter. Curious how the found the white pine for carving. Thanks for giving us a look.

Patrick... the White Pine is nice to carve, though you do have to watch for splintering. I use a lot of it on ships hulls. A little softer than Basswood and fuzzies much worse, but hand carving works well. Polishes up well and takes paint great, somewhat shinny when finished, but you can work with that. Very easy to get locally and a lot cheaper than Basswood or most other carving woods. Can still get it in big sizes.
