Randy, I always fill the cracks by carving wood shimes and then glue and drive them into the crack. when the glue has dried I carve them down flush and any small holes left I will mix sanding dust and glue to make a paste and use it as a filler

A very nice looking work of art! What did you use to fill in the cracks?

Hi everyone thanks for taking time to look. Kathy I usually carve 4ft.-6ft pieces so this is a small one. Tony Persimmon seems to hold detail well but this pc. anyway likes to split and I have to buff my tool often because it leaves a residue on the blade, but like I said this log has not been down to long.

Looks like you're doing a fine job! I like the light color of the wood. I've heard of people covering their carvings with a plastic bag, I've only done it on a small diameter limb.It worked fairly well. Hope it dries good for you.

Hi Jbarr, looks like a super start on your Native American woman. She is going to be a really nice size, do you normally carve this size? Nice looking wood, looks very light in color. I hope you will update us as you progress.

    Persimmon Indian woman

This is going to be an native american woman wraped in a buffalo robe. It is out of a pc. of persimmon log 12" dia. X 42" its only been down one year and is really unstable. so I am carving it slow and covering it with a trash bag between sessions.
